The 2026 Mel Zajac Jr. International Swim Meet kicked off with a bang, showcasing some incredible talent and setting the stage for an exciting weekend of competition. This meet, held at the UBC Aquatic Centre in Vancouver, Canada, brought together some of the country's top swimmers, along with emerging stars from both Canada and the United States.
One of the standout performers on night one was Liberty Clark, who dominated in the women's events. Clark, with a personal best time of 1:57.64 in the 200 freestyle, left her competitors in her wake, finishing almost two seconds ahead of Marlee Winser. This win was particularly impressive given that Clark's previous best was a solid 1:58.18, and she managed to shave off valuable seconds.
But Clark wasn't done yet. She went on to win the 50 butterfly, swimming a remarkable 26.52 and beating the legendary Kylie Masse by a significant margin. This swim not only secured her another victory but also set a new personal record, dropping her time from 26.92 in May.
Another American swimmer, Sydney Schoeck, also had a remarkable night, winning two events and finishing second in a third. Schoeck's performance in the 200 backstroke was especially noteworthy, as she set a massive personal best time of 2:09.81, beating her previous best by a whopping two seconds. This win sets Schoeck up nicely for her future at Texas in the fall.
Schoeck's success continued in the 400 IM, where she touched the wall in 4:41.21, just edging out Sadie Buckley. Schoeck's strong second half of the race, with splits of 1:22.44 and 1:03.11, showcased her endurance and strategic racing.
The men's events also featured some tight competition, with Canadian Olympian Josh Liendo taking on some impressive American teenagers. In the 200 freestyle, Liendo finished sixth, with Finlay Knox taking the top spot. All the swimmers in this event have been faster in the past, which just goes to show the high level of competition at this meet.
In the 50 fly, Liendo again finished outside the top spot, with Santo Condorelli taking the win. Liendo's lifetime best of 23.11, set at the 2025 World Championships, showcases his potential, but he'll need to bring his A-game to the next round of competitions.
Other notable men's performances include David Kovacs, who won the 200 backstroke with a new personal best time, and Wilson York, who took the 400 IM title.
