ZHA's latest cultural venue in Dongguan, China, is a testament to the studio's ability to blend tradition and innovation seamlessly. The Songshan Lake Exhibition and Performance Centre is a stunning example of how architecture can pay homage to local heritage while pushing the boundaries of contemporary design.
A Cultural Haven Inspired by Cantonese Opera
The project draws inspiration from Cantonese Opera, a rich cultural heritage of Dongguan with a history spanning over 700 years. The building's sweeping volumes evoke the flowing 'water sleeves' worn by performers, creating a dynamic composition of interconnected forms that rise towards the main theater and exhibition hall.
This design not only pays respect to the city's past but also shapes a vibrant public space for the present and future. The center becomes a civic and cultural destination, offering a diverse range of activities, from performances and exhibitions to public gatherings.
Lingnan Architecture and the Extended Roof
The roof of the center is a masterpiece in itself, extending outward in a series of broad overhangs inspired by the upturned eaves of traditional Lingnan architecture. These shaded outdoor areas not only provide shelter from Dongguan's humid subtropical climate but also create a seamless connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding public plaza, garden terraces, and waterfront promenade.
Acoustic Excellence and Sustainable Innovation
Inside the Grand Theatre, an acoustic engineering marvel awaits. Walls and ceilings are adorned with approximately 100,000 slender acoustic spines, varying in length, density, and tone. This installation ensures consistent acoustic performance throughout the auditorium, diffusing sound and reducing standing waves, resulting in a rich and immersive auditory experience.
Sustainability is a key feature of the project. Prefabricated ultra-high-performance concrete cladding, cast from reusable molds, minimizes construction waste and installation time. Photovoltaic panels, rainwater harvesting systems, and permeable landscape surfaces further enhance the building's environmental strategy, while restored wetlands along the waterfront promote biodiversity and flood mitigation.
